Great turnout at the ADI Design Museum for the meeting with Armando Milani organized by Cappelli Identity Design
On January 23, 2024, we had the honor of organizing, at the ADI Design Museum, the event Peace&War by Armando Milani: a manifesto for Peace, a meeting that recorded a great turnout of public, demonstrating how much design can be a key to reflection on great universal themes such as peace and identity. The designer Armando Milani, author of the famous manifesto donated to the United Nations, spoke with Luciano Galimberti, President of ADI, Emanuele Cappelli, creator of the Hats Art Gallery project, and the anthropologist Dario Basile, professor at the University of Turin and writer.
The Peace&War manifesto, designed in 2002 by Armando Milani, was re-proposed in a limited edition to celebrate its relevance in a historical moment of great international tension.

Luciano Galimberti, President of ADI, introduced the debate: «It is always a great honor to host Armando Milani, with his background, his works, his experience. His manifesto, re-proposed and updated, is one of the most representative works of Italian design. Design, in fact, is not simply a technical-functional response to a need, but a fundamental factor linked to narration, to the ability to build relationships with the world through values and the courage to take a stand regarding the great issues of the world ».
Armando Milani, protagonist of the evening, declared: «We do not have the power of politicians to change the world, but we have the duty to perform actions that make people reflect. With Peace&War I wanted to translate into an image a universal message that pushes from the eye to the heart and moves towards a concrete change. The work of the designer, in fact, is to transform an idea into a social and ethical message and, in this creative context, my client is humanity».
Emanuele Cappelli, creator of the Hats Art Gallery project, underlined: «With Hats Art Gallery we chose to spread the Culture of Design through works by iconic authors, starting with Armando Milani and his Peace&War manifesto, bearer of deep social messages. In a landscape where design is often dominated by market logic, Milani embodies ethics and enthusiasm, representing a model of identity and diversity. This project reflects the values of Cappelli Identity Design, reaffirming the role of design as a tool to improve people's lives, with an ethical mission before a commercial one».
Dario Basile, anthropologist, professor and writer, concluded: «Armando Milani argues that peace is closely linked to love. Love and peace are two words that go perfectly together. Love means respect, empathy and Nelson Mandela also reminded us of this with the philosophy of Ubuntu: starting from others, not from ourselves. In this historical moment we really need peace and love. Love is no longer in fashion, but it is profoundly important if we consider it as social love: that gesture that is made without demanding anything in return. This would be the premise for having a better world. Perhaps it is from these gestures that we should start».

The event was promoted by Hats Art Gallery and the limited edition Peace&War manifesto is available in the Treccani bookshop of the ADI Design Museum and on hatsartgallery.com.
